What is the points system in Australian skilled migration?

The Australian skilled migration points score is a system used by the Australian government to assess the eligibility of skilled workers who wish to immigrate to Australia. The points score is based on a range of factors such as age, qualifications, work experience, and English language proficiency.

Under the current system, applicants must score at least 65 points on the points test in order to be eligible to apply for a skilled migration visa. Points are awarded based on the following criteria:

The points are awarded based on the following criteria:

  • Age: applicants aged between 25 and 32 receive the most points (30), while those aged under 18 or over 44 receive no points.
  • Qualifications: Points are awarded for having a relevant tertiary education and for holding certain professional qualifications.
  • Work experience: Points are awarded for having relevant work experience in your nominated occupation, with more points being awarded for longer periods of experience.
  • English language proficiency: Points are awarded for having a high level of proficiency in the English language, as determined by an approved English language test.

Additional points can also be awarded for certain criteria such as:

  • State sponsorship: Additional 5 points are awarded for the candidates who are nominated by a state or territory government.
  • Partner skill qualifications: 5 points for the partner of the applicant who has the relevant qualifications and/or work experience.
  • Community language: 5 points for the applicants who have proficient in community languages other than English.
  • Professional Year in Australia: 5 points for the applicants who have completed a professional year in Australia.

It is important to note that the points system can change over time and it’s always recommended to check the most recent information and seek professional advice. Also, keep in mind that meeting the minimum points score does not guarantee a visa, as the government also takes into account factors such as occupation ceilings and other factors relevant to the visa category.
